Step Over vs Step Through

Step over frames may be preferred for more performance-oriented or specialized cycling, while step through frames offer easier accessibility and are often more comfortable for casual and city riding.

Step Over E-Bike:

  • A step over e-bike, also known as a "diamond frame" or "high-step" frame, has a traditional, straight top tube, similar to many non-electric bicycles.
  • This design is more common on mountain bikes and road bikes, and it requires riders to swing their leg over the top tube when mounting and dismounting the bike.
  • Step over e-bikes are often chosen by riders who prioritize a more sporty or aggressive riding position and are not concerned about the height of the top tube.

Step Through E-Bike:

  • A step through e-bike, sometimes referred to as a "low-step" or "step-thru" frame, has a low or slanted top tube that allows riders to easily step through the frame when getting on and off the bike.
  • This design is typically more accessible and accommodating for riders of various heights and physical abilities, making it a popular choice for individuals who may have difficulty swinging their leg over a high top tube.
  • Step through e-bikes are often preferred by commuters, seniors, and riders who want a more comfortable and relaxed riding experience.

Hydraulic vs Mechanical Brakes

Hydraulic Brakes:

  • Hydraulic brakes use a hydraulic fluid to transmit force from the brake lever to the brake caliper, which then squeezes the brake pads against the rotor to create friction and stop the bike.
  • Hydraulic systems are known for their excellent modulation, which means they allow for precise control of braking power. You can easily apply a little or a lot of braking force by varying the lever pressure.
  • They typically require less effort at the brake lever to achieve the same level of stopping power compared to mechanical brakes, making them easier to use, especially for riders with weaker grip strength.

Mechanical Brakes:

  • Mechanical brakes use a cable to transmit force from the brake lever to the brake caliper, which then squeezes the brake pads against the rotor to create friction and stop the bike.
  • While they may not offer the same level of modulation as hydraulic brakes, they still provide adequate stopping power for most e-bike applications.

Mid-Drive vs Hub-Drive

Mid-drive motors are preferred for hilly or off-road riding where you need the added power and gear optimization, while hub-drive motors are suitable for flat terrain and city commuting.

Mid-drive motors are mounted near the bike's bottom bracket, where the pedals are attached. They provide power directly to the bike's chain and gears. Mid-drive motors provide a more natural riding experience because they apply power to the pedals, which feels similar to regular pedaling. They tend to offer better weight distribution on the bike, which can improve stability and handling, especially for off-road riding.

Hub-drive motors are generally quieter and require less maintenance than mid-drive motors because they have fewer moving parts. They tend to provide a more stealthy look to the e-bike, as the motor is hidden within the wheel hub.

Battery Life

The battery capacity you need depends on your specific requirements. Here are some factors to consider:

  1. Range: Higher-capacity batteries provide longer riding ranges before needing a recharge. If you plan to ride long distances, you'll want a larger capacity battery. Most Pursuit E-Bikes allow over 50 miles of range.
  2. Terrain: Hilly terrain and off-road riding may require more power, so a higher-capacity battery is beneficial out there.
